How to Start Meditating
Start simple. Find a quiet place, sit comfortably with a straight spine, and begin with just 5-10 minutes. Consistency is more important than duration.
Technique 1: Breath Awareness
Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Notice your breath — the rise and fall of the chest or the sensation at the nostrils. When the mind wanders (and it will), gently bring it back to the breath. Start with 5 minutes.
Technique 2: Body Scan
Lie down or sit. Bring attention to the top of your head. Slowly move awareness down through the body — face, neck, shoulders, arms, chest, abdomen, legs, feet. Notice sensations without judgment. Release tension.
Technique 3: Loving-Kindness (Metta)
Sit comfortably. Silently repeat: "May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I be at peace." Then extend to others: "May you be happy..." Start with yourself, then loved ones, then all beings.
Technique 4: Mantra Meditation
Choose a mantra (Om, So Hum, or any word that resonates). Repeat silently with each breath. When the mind wanders, return to the mantra. The sound vibrations help quiet the mind.
Technique 5: Walking Meditation
Walk slowly, bringing full attention to each step. Feel the foot lift, move, and place. Coordinate with breath. Not a stroll — a meditation in motion.
