Why Meditate?
Meditation is the practice of training the mind to achieve a state of relaxed awareness, inner stillness, and expanded consciousness. Regular meditation reduces stress, improves focus, lowers blood pressure, enhances emotional well-being, and deepens spiritual connection.
How to Start Meditating — Step by Step
- Find a quiet place: Choose a spot where you won't be disturbed
- Sit comfortably: Cross-legged on a cushion or on a chair with feet flat on the floor. Straight spine.
- Set a timer: Start with just 5-10 minutes. Consistency matters more than duration.
- Close your eyes: Gently close your eyes and take a few deep breaths
- Notice your breath: Feel the rise and fall of your chest or the sensation at the nostrils
- When the mind wanders: It will. Gently bring attention back to the breath. No judgment.
- End gently: When the timer goes off, take a few deep breaths and slowly open your eyes
5 Techniques for Beginners
1. Breath Awareness
Simply observe your breath. The most basic and powerful technique.
2. Body Scan
Move attention from the top of your head down through your body, noticing and releasing tension.
3. Loving-Kindness (Metta)
Silently repeat: 'May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I be at peace.'
4. Mantra Meditation
Choose a word (Om, So Hum) and repeat silently with each breath.
5. Walking Meditation
Walk slowly, bringing full attention to each step. Meditation in motion.
An Astrologer's Perspective on Meditation
As an astrologer, I see meditation as the practice of aligning with your planetary energies. When you meditate, you calm the agitated planets (like Mars and Rahu) and strengthen the beneficial ones (like Jupiter and the Moon). The best time to meditate depends on your chart, but generally, early morning (before sunrise, during Brahma Muhurta) is ideal.
